Hamilton (West End tour) is an outstanding production and I have had to update this review as I am obsessed! This musical tells the story of Alexander Hamilton, one of the Founding Fathers of the United States. It covers his personal life and some of the history of American Independence through musical theatre rap! The soundtrack is a lot of rap and RnB, expertly written with lots of double entendres. The way certain words/themes are interconnected from one song to another is amazing. It is written by the incredible Lin-Manuel Miranda, who you might be familiar with from the Moana and Encanto soundtrack. Going in I did not know much of the story, but since listening and watching it on Disney+, I have got a much better understanding of the history.
Both Alexander and Eliza were extraordinary people and it is an interesting story and history, and emotional in parts. Don’t ask me how many times I have cried when I hear “the orphanage”. I love how Hamilton was obsessed with his legacy and Miranda has helped uplift this.
The whole production is superb and actors were standing ovation worthy! We saw the Alt Hamilton at the time (Jonathan Hermosa-Lopez) who should 100% have the role full time. He was passionate and brilliant! King George had the best expressions and was very funny. I highly recommend a watch while it is touring the UK, or see it in London! Book tickets
The age recommendation is 10+.The story is quite complex so it will go over the head of younger audiences, but the songs are great even if you don’t follow the storyline in full. It would be a great one with friends or for date night!
🥂Order drinks to your seat for before the performance and at the interval (There are QR codes on the back of seats, or order at the bar or go on the ATG website in advance)
⭐️ It isn’t essential but if you are not familiar with the history, I would have a quick look up Alexander Hamilton and The Founding Fathers online, so you are more familiar with who’s who and the series of events! There are a couple of actors that play two characters. I would recommend listening to the soundtrack ahead if you can to increase the emotional impact. I recommend Helpless, Satisfied, Alexander Hamilton, The Schuyler Sisters and Non-Stop as parts of some of these songs repeat in later songs too! 🎵 You can also watch the Broadway original cast performing Hamilton with Lin-Manuel Miranda as Hamilton on Disney+!
If you don’t manage to see it in Bristol, you can see it at Birmingham Hippdrome 25 June – 31 August, or Cardiff Wales Millenium Centre 26 November 2024 – 25 January 2025
