Traditional Birthday Parties
Halls & Venues to Hire
My picks of the best venues I have seen for children’s parties, prioritising a nice setting and some with outdoor space:
- Redcatch Community Garden – Marquee hire so it is indoors, but you have the community garden (with cafe kiosk) and Redcatch park next to it which has a great play area.
- Zion Bristol (BS13) – Hall with bar and garden. We hired this for a 2nd birthday party.
- Ashton Vale Community Centre – Big hall and big garden. We have used this twice.
- Imperial Sports Ground Hall – Big hall to hire which is modern and light.
- Pomphrey Hill Pavilion – Room for hire with lots of windows overlooking Pomphrey Hill.
- Windmill Hill City Farm – Indoor and outdoor options for hire.
- The Old Library (Eastville) – Indoor and outdoor space
- Doynton Village Hall – This is east of Bristol near Dyrham Park. Beautiful setting with indoor and outdoor space.
- The Manor Hall at Coalpit Heath – Multiple rooms to hire, lovely setting and community garden.

DIY Party Activities
- Organise activities around a theme. Read about our Adopt a Pet Party!
- Traditional party games e.g. pass the parcel, musical chairs/statues, pin the tail on the donkey, Simon says
- Craft table – look on Pinterest for ideas
- Tuff trays – sensory play
- Garden Games – Stomp rocket, floor chalks, ball games! Obstacle course, scavenger hunt.
- Cupcake decorating
- Simple Face Painting – you could do something easy like rainbow cat whiskers or buy a couple of stencils, or glitter! Temporary tattoos always go down well too.
- Parachute games
- Bubbles – fill a bucket with wands for kids to help themselves to or buy bigger bubble tools and make your own mixture
- Make tie dye tshirts
- DIY craft kits e.g. Baker Ross do multi-packs
- Giant colouring sheet – tape to the floor
- Disco lights and music, loose balloons
Garden Party
A garden party can be special, intimate and inexpensive. Ideas to make it special:
1. Food: Make or buy a cake, have special food/favourite foods e.g. party food, afternoon tea, picnic or BBQ.
2. Bouncy castle: Hire a bouncy castle or a money saving hack for those with young children… Buy a toddler bouncy castle off Facebook marketplace, use it for the weekend and resell it a few days later! Alternatively, get a new water play inflatable.
3. Party games: Traditional party games are so much fun e.g. pass the parcel, musical chairs/bumps, Simon says. You could make an obstacle course or have a scavenger hunt.
4. Decorate: I love to make my own balloon arches. If you are on a budget you can get them for around £10 from AliExpress. Order a few months in advance to allow for delivery as it can be slow. Watch a YouTube tutorial on how to do it. Picking a theme for decorating can be fun!
5. At home cinema: These set ups look like a lot of fun for summer birthdays such as from Sunset Cinema
6. Sleepover tipi hire – for kids of sleepover age these look great for something special.
7. Hot tub hire: Fun for older kids!
8. Dome hire: These look lovely when decorated. You can get one from Sparkle Igloo
Party in a Park
If the weather is on your side a party in a park is a great budget friendly party option. We have been to one at Victoria Park and spotted them at Ashton Court. The one we went to had party food, a bubble wand, garden games (a stomp rocket is always a hit) and a water table. It was a 3rd birthday and the kids were very entertained! You can easily host party games with lots of space. Some entertainers will host a party in a park. You could have a teddy bears picnic party, or set up a scavenger hunt. Other parks with a nice setting and toilets: Page Park, St George Park, Blaise Castle, and Oldbury Court Estate.
